In this work, Lek melds genres of science fiction, documentary melodrama, social realism and Chinese cosmologies to view the future through the lens of China’s technological development. Through “Sinofuturism,” Lek asks us to reassess our valuation of the copy: “ [the] video essay [‘Sinofuturism’] … [aims] to see things from the machine’s perspective, to see copying as not lesser than originality … to see gameplay and gambling as not lesser than the fine arts or … His works include the video game ‘Unreal Estate: The Royal Academy is Yours’ (2015 Dazed Emerging Artist Award), the influential video essay ‘Sinofuturism (1839-2046 AD)’, the AI-coming-of-age story ‘Geomancer’ (2017 Jerwood/FVU Award), and ‘Nøtel’, a simulation of a fully-automated luxury hotel in collaboration with Kode9 (ICA, London; Art Basel). Sinofuturism (1839-2046 AD) is a piece of science fiction where an AI emerges from the same patterns that Chinese culture uses to replicate itself. Lawrence Lek uses video game software to imagine a future in which the Royal Academy of Arts has been sold off as a privately owned luxury estate. This dystopian world, created for the Dazed Emerging Artist Award, is accompanied by a soundtrack by virtuoso cellist Oliver Coates and a voiceover of a found text from Russian Tatler magazine, translated into Mandarin by Joni Zhu.
Through Lek’s presentation, we got to know the stories behind the films included in the Sinofuturist Trilogy: Sinofuturism (2016), Geomancer (2017), and Aidol (2019), all of which attendees were invited to stream prior to the event. “but where sinofuturism intersects with gambling is in an intense belief in the future. this future is an imprint of a society based on the field, in the factory, a future propelled by dreams of prosperity and the transcendence of work. it is no accident that much artificial intelligence research focuses on making programs play games.
