The modern city of Tel Aviv was founded on the outskirts of Jaffa in 1909 and today, it encompasses the ancient city. Joppa is located at the only natural harbor on the Mediterranean between Ptolemaisand Egypt and was, for centuries, Jerusalem's main seaport. Joppa is first mentioned as a city given to the Israelite tribe of Dan as an inheritance in the Promised Land (Joshua 19:40 - 46). Joppa is referred to in the bible several times.
